The compact SUV market in South Africa is highly competitive, with strong demand from middle-class buyers seeking versatility, affordability, and lifestyle appeal. The Ford Territory, launched locally in 2024, and entered a segment dominated by established best-sellers such as the Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage, while also facing aggressive competition from newer Chinese entrants like the Haval H6, and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. Sales for the Territory were strong out of the blocks and unlike the Ford Puma, it has earned a long-term spot in Ford’s South African range. With the Territory Dark Edition, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa is looking to build upon that success and enhance the lifestyle appeal component of the compact SUV buyer’s list of requirements.

This, as the Dark Edition of the Territory is the one that looks like it has dressed itself up for a night out, boasting a blacked-out roof, mirrors and alloys giving it a stance that is more menacing than mainstream and a look that conveys drama more than utility. It got plenty of stares and comments during the school run, trips to the mall and church, with the best comment from an admirer at a forecourt stating, “It is a car that looks like it has been dipped in espresso and dusted with attitude”.

On the topic of school run, the caverness boot offering 448 litres of space with the rear seats up and 1422 litres with the rear seats folded down. This is more than enough for weekend shopping runs as well as the three schoolbags and two caddis of my three daughters (aged 4, 8 and 10) who also found that both head (971mm) and legroom (956mm) to be amongst the best we’ve come across in an SUV (we’ve owned an Audi Q5, previous-gen Volvo XC60 and Toyota Fortuner for reference). I can sit comfortably behind myself with the front seat in my driving position with my height of 1.74 m.

Adding to this sense of space is the panoramic moonroof that floods the cabin with light, and luckily also has a sunshade to keep the South African sun from toasting the occupants on the hottest summer days. It is not only the light from the moonroof that breaks up the otherwise brooding cabin as the orange stitching across the seats and dash also adds in this mission while adding a splash of flair. Upfront, you get a fancy pair of dual screens that ups the cabin ambience, namely the 12″ LCD instrument cluster and 12.3″ Coloured Touchscreen for the in-vehicle infotainment system. The latter unlike every other Ford is not Ford Sync but a snappy, easy on the eyes system that is easy to use and navigate – even for older users and the technophobes amongst us, while most users will simply pair their iPhones or Android smartphones to be able to utilise Android Auto or Apple CarPlay – wirelessly or wired as both options are catered to by this system. Other convenience and family-friendly features includes wireless charging, a fantastic 360-degree camera system that coupled with the front and rear parking sensors makes parking a breeze, and a myriad of USB ports with three being located up front and one in the rear (Type C x1, Type A x3).

Under the bonnet lies a 1.8-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine producing 138 kW and 318 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. This makes the Territory feel eager and responsive, particularly in overtaking manoeuvres where the torque delivery is smooth and confident. It is not a hot hatch, but it is more spirited than the heavier Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which sometimes feels burdened by its size. Against the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, both with 1.6-litre turbocharged engines, the Ford holds its own, offering a balance of performance and efficiency with a claimed consumption of 7L/100km. Although we got around 8.7 l/100km on the highway and as high as 10.8 l/100 km when only doing the school run in the morning and afternoons (around a roundtrip of 5km).

Inside, the Territory Dark Edition impresses with its materials feeling premium, though the Tucson and Sportage still edge Ford in terms of refinement. Safety is well covered with six airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring, while towing capacity of 1,310 kg is adequate for lifestyle trailers but less than the range-topping RAV4’s 1,500 kg.

Pricing is where the Territory Dark Edition must prove its worth. At around R733,000, it is competitively priced against rivals like the Toyota RAV4 (R734 100 for the RAV4 2.0 VX CVT 2WD), and also matches the Tiggo 8 Pro Max’s value proposition despite offering two fewer seats. The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage sit slightly lower at around R709,900 (Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Executive Dsl AT) to R716,995 (Sportage 2WD 1.6T-GDi GT-Line), while these are admittedly mid-spec offerings compared to the range-topping Territory Dark Edition. The Ford therefore, positions itself as a stylish, tech-rich SUV that balances flair and function without breaking the R740k barrier.

In conclusion, the Ford Territory Dark Edition is definitely one of the most convincing SUV offerings. It is more dramatic than the Tucson, more youthful than the Sportage, and more premium-feeling than the JAECOO J7. Yet it cannot quite match the RAV4’s practicality or the Tiggo 8 Pro Max’s sheer space and power. For buyers who want a family SUV that blends style, technology and decent performance at a competitive price, the Territory Dark Edition is a really compelling choice. It may not be the most powerful, but it is certainly one of the most charismatic, and that alone makes it a worthy contender in South Africa’s crowded compact SUV market.
