Chery Group South Africa has announced plans to produce the new Omoda C4 at its Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, with local assembly set to get underway in the third quarter of 2027.

South African buyers can expect the C4 to land as a fully imported model in early 2027, before local production ramps up later in the year. The first units off the Rosslyn line will be hybrids, with petrol and fully electric versions set to join the range in due course.

“The first roll-out plan for Omoda at the Rosslyn plant will be the Omoda C4 hybrid,” said Tony Liu, CEO of Chery Group South Africa. “The C4 is the latest Omoda on our newest platform. We will also have hybrid and BEV versions, with the BEV version and petrol derivative introduced at a later stage.”

A milestone for Omoda’s local ambitions

Alan Quinn, Chief Innovation and Product Officer at Cars.co.za said, bringing the C4 production to Rosslyn marks a key expansion for the brand’s local line-up.

“The Omoda C4 brings Omoda’s newest platform and design language to South Africa, and building it at Rosslyn allows us to offer customers a more accessible, locally assembled product,” he said. “With hybrid, petrol and electric versions planned, the C4 will give South African buyers greater choice as the market continues to evolve.”

Introducing the Omoda C4 to South Africa

Initially unveiled as the C3 in April 2025, the model was renamed C4 for the South African market. Slotting in just below the Omoda C5, the C4 stretches to 4 424 mm in length, making it slightly longer than its sibling.

The C4 forms part of Chery Group’s wider strategy to grow its local manufacturing footprint at Rosslyn, the former Nissan facility acquired earlier in 2026. The plant is currently being recommissioned, with production scheduled to start in the second half of 2027.

Hybrid, petrol and electric versions planned

Launching first as a hybrid electric vehicle, the locally built C4 signals Chery Group’s confidence that South African uptake of new energy vehicles is set to gain momentum.

Rosslyn’s production line-up will later expand to include battery-electric and internal combustion engine variants, broadening the options available to local buyers.

Rosslyn’s model range expands

The Omoda C4 will join a growing roster of models set for local assembly at Rosslyn, including the Chery Tiggo 4, Jaecoo J5, Jetour T-Series and the forthcoming Chery Grootman double-cab bakkie.

Chery Group’s shift to local manufacturing represents a major transition from importer to producer in South Africa, with positive implications for local assembly, supplier development and job creation in Gauteng’s automotive sector.
