BCX is excited to announce the nominees who will learn their fate at the Sunday Times Top 100 event. The nominees stand a chance of earning the title of top Digital Innovator in their categories for 2023.    

The BCX Digital Innovation Awards (DIA) celebrates not just innovation but extraordinary innovation that has the power to transform businesses, and industries and to reshape our future. 

In a landscape where innovation is the heartbeat of progress, these innovations underscore the dynamic evolution of digital innovation across various sectors in South Africa. As our society and businesses continue to embrace digital transformation, we are witnessing, through the BCX DIA, ground-breaking solutions that not only drive revenue but also champion social access.  

“This year, the calibre of innovation we’ve witnessed is inspiring. From a pool of 125 remarkable applicants, we’ve carefully handpicked the nine finalists who have left us in sheer amazement,” says Siyabulela Mpahlwa, the Chief Commercial Officer and Innovation Sponsor at BCX.   

The three categories include the Corporate and Public Sectors, and Small and Medium Enterprise, each of which boasts three nominees per category. 

The shortlist of the Top 3 Nominees in each category: 

Public Sector Finalists: 

·       SARS has improved its services with an auto-assessment for personal income tax.  

·       The Joburg Public Library has created a mobile eLearning platform to increase reading skills and literacy. 

·       eThekwini created a data hub for digitisation, automation, and data visualisation, improving the city’s operational efficiencies while improving service delivery to citizens. 

Corporate Sector Finalists: 

·       ABSA (Customer Engagement) presents Data Analytics Predictive Modelling, a cutting-edge approach to hyper-personalised offers for customers, improving customer engagement and experience. 

·       Afrika Tikkun has created a free-to-use online learning platform, offering internationally recognised Microsoft certifications through a low-bandwidth data consumption model. 

·       Netcare Heal has improved their records management with an electronic medical record system. 

SME Sector Finalists: 

·       CareConnect Health Information Exchange is enhancing healthcare through a digitally enabled healthcare system through the Health Information Exchange.  

·       Medsol AI Solutions developed a tool for the AI detection of breast cancer through wireless ultrasound probes in rural South Africa. 

·       Momint leverages blockchain technology for Crowd-sourcing investments in solar power. 

The impact of these innovations is far-reaching. Our society now enjoys easier access to essential services, while businesses and governments benefit from increased operational efficiency, all thanks to digital innovation. The pace of digital innovation in South Africa has accelerated significantly, showcasing the extraordinary efforts of corporations, SMEs, and the public sector in adopting technology to tackle common challenges.
