After launching the new Clio GT-Line back in April, Renault has now turn the performance dial up further with the launch of its fourth-generation Clio RS. Local buyers have a choice between a hot hatch in the form of the Clio RS Lux and extra hot hatch when they opt for the Clio RS Trophy.

Two different types of chassis and petrol engines are available, with the Clio RS Sport chassis on the
Lux model boasting 17″ wheels that is good for versatility as well as everyday use. At the other end of the performance spectrum is the Trophy chassis with 18″ wheels and has been lowered by 20 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear in order to place the focus firmly on driving pleasure.

The Lux version of the Clio RS is powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine that delivers 147 kW of power, while the same powerplant under the bonnet of the Clio RS Trophy produces 162 kW. Both engines are mated to a six speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission with convenient steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts, enabling multi gear change down in quick succession with high-speed braking, a feature that Renault says was inspired directly via F1 technology.

Thanks to that engine and gearbox combination, the top speed of the Trophy is 235 km/h while it can do the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.6 seconds. Despite its high performance, the consumption of this RS vehicle is a claimed 5.9 liters per 100 km.

Beyond the performance and some minor design updates, buyers can also expect launch control, a 7″ touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity, and the RS Diff, which is the electronic differential – a system which
enables the driver to retain traction and limit vehicle skidding by using ABS and ESP sensors, in
conjunction with the vehicle’s brakes.

Warranty and service plan

As with the rest of the Renault range, the new Clio RS models come standard with a five year or 150 000 km mechanical warranty, together with a six year anti-corrosion warranty. A three year or 30 000 km service plan applies, with service intervals at 10 000 km.
