Opel adds the Crossland X to the compact crossover fray, forming part of the Opel X-model range. It brings to this important and fast-growing segment exceptional flexibility, spaciousness, innovative safety features and premium quality.
The X alludes to the fact that it crosses over into B-SUV territory, a fact reinforced by the wheel arch cladding giving it a sportier and more robust appearance. The Crossland’s stand out visual feature is the distinctive floating roof – available in a contrasting colour – giving it a strong connection to the Opel design family, as does the bold blitz in the tall, upright grille.
Longer and/or wider than class rivals, the Crossland X is aimed at family-orientated individuals who are looking for a crossover utility vehicle that offers great looking design accompanied by a spacious cabin and added safety technologies at value for money.
With pricing at R265 000 for the 1.2 entry level model, R305 000 for the 1.2T Enjoy and R345 000 and R360 000 for the 1.2T Cosmo Manual and Automatic, the Crossland X range ticks all the boxes for this kind of young buyer.
Chrome detailing adds a premium feel while the rear aerofoil hints at a sporty bent. Less obvious is the panoramic glass roof.
Distinctive light cluster design – with optional LED technology both front and rear on the Cosmo – add visual ‘zing’ and there’s also a safety benefit to the all-seeing LEDs.
The retractable cover for the panoramic roof sets the tone for an interior with a classy and upmarket ambience. Added to this the lush and soft-to-the-touch feel of the dashboard with subtle chrome touches.
The drop-down section of the centre console is dominated by either a seven- or eight-inch touch screen (model-dependant), from where key functions can be controlled and smart devices integrated with the vehicle. This is backed up by comprehensive steering wheel controls.
In this segment space utilisation is a high priority and the sliding rear seat gives the best of both worlds for Enjoy and Cosmo buyers, with an added benefit of a standard 60:40 split that can be staggered accordingly. Or, either portion can be collapsed into the floor, the dive-down aspect – also a feature of the non-sliding rear seat on the base model – creating more volume.
With the rear compartment dedicated entirely to luggage there’s a gargantuan 1 255 litres available, while conversely, with maximum rear legroom liberated there’s still 410 litres of volume to hand. Minimise legroom by sliding the seats forward and that number grows by 110 litres.
All Crossland X models are powered by the proven 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine, with a choice of non-turbo (60 kW/ 118Nm) or turbocharged (81 kW/205 Nm) versions. They drive the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, apart from the Cosmo flagship which is also available with a six-speed automatic.
Opel’s stated objective in recent years has been to democratise technology and the Crossland X lives up to that promise. Flagship versions boast a camera-based lane departure warning system and intelligent speed adaption integrated with the standard cruise control – an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) seldom seen at this level. The entry level model also has hill start assist, eight airbags, full-house braking management systems, LED running lamps, auto-on lights and Bluetooth connectivity.
Move up the trim scale to the Enjoy, Opel adds rear camera with park assist and rain-sensing wipers, and on the Cosmo a no-holds-barred approach to driver assistance systems with automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and driver drowsiness alert. These are just some of the technologically-advanced safety systems on offer.
The Crossland X is sold with a fully-comprehensive five-year or 120 000 km warranty and roadside assistance programme, a five-year or unlimited mileage anti-corrosion warranty and a three-year or 60 000 km service plan. Service intervals are 15 000 km or twelve months for all derivatives.
