OPPO is quickly becoming one of our favourite brands for that enticing combination of impressive spec- and design bang for a really good price.

The Reno5 5G (159.1 x 73.4 x 7.9mm; about 172g) feels as good and premium in the hand as its flagship smartphone brothern and features comparable performance to boot, but does so for a noticeable amount less.

Under the bonnet resides a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G CPU that features 8 cores operating at a maximum frequency of 2.4 GHZ which is paired with a Adreno 620 GPU clocked at 625 MHz. You get 8GB RAM and 128 GB worth of non-expandable onboard storage. This all ensures for a smooth and snappy mobile experience that sees the device running OPPO’s ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. Opening and closing apps, mobile gaming and multitasking are all no issue for the Reno5 5G.

In terms of the highly competent camera setup, you get a 64MP main camera (f/1.7 with field of view of 80°), an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2 with an FOV of 119°), a 2MP macro camera (f/2.4; FOV 89°) for excelling with upclose shots, and a 2MP mono camera (f/2.4; FOV 89°). Also excellent is the 32 MP (f/2.4; FOV 85°) selfie-shooter that doubles as a Face ID scanner.

You can review your snaps on the 6.4″(16.33 cm) AMOLED screen that sports great colour contrast levels and detail (2400 x 1080; FHD+; 410 PPI), making it ideal for content consumption. Further assisting in that function is its screen to body ratio of 91.7% and buttery smoorth 90Hz refresh rate that uplifts your mobile gaming experience within titles that support higher refresh rates as well as using the device in general. You can use the smartphone outdoors thanks to its maximum screen brightness of 600 nits, which is dialed down to a still good 430 nits within indoor usage.

Also onboard is a 4300mAh battery that will get you through the working day, at least on 4G LTE connectivity, but once you run out of juice you’ll appreciate the super-fast (even for fast charging) supports and includes a 65W fast charger in the box. The fact that OPPO not only throws in a charger (as firms like Apple and Samsung now all decided not to include even non-fast charging ones). It will get you fully charged up from flat in less than 45 minutes but in a pinch can top you up by 15% battery life in 5 minutes. Definitely our favourite party trick of this device.

The smartphone is also futureproofed by its 5G support. 5G Connectivity is not exactly widespread today but the network capabilities are being built out by our local operators and in future 5G will be an essential feature and this smartphone already supports it today (lookout for video content around 5G speeds and experience on our YouTube channel in future).

Final word

All in all, the OPPO Reno5 5G impresses on all fronts including the look and feel, performance, battery life as well as charging and all this for a recommended retail price of around R14500 through local retailers such as Incredible Connection and Takealot. This makes it more affordable than competitors such as the base Samsung Galaxy S21 (R17000), and Galaxy S21 5G variants (R22500 and up).
