The Freedom Day public holiday, an annual commemoration of South Africa’s first democratic elections on April 27, 1994, is fast approaching. With a continued need for social distancing, there are not many public gatherings this year to observe this important day. The good news is that you can remember this milestone event using your Android smartphone. Alcatel suggests four ways:

  1. Check out South African books and movies on the Google play store

Supporting South African writers and filmmakers, and reading up about our country’s history, are wonderful ways to celebrate Freedom Day. You can find a wealth of South African movies and books on the Google Play store, or download the Kindle app for access to a rich selection of books. Our Freedom Day recommendation—Nelson Mandela’s inspiring memoir, Long Walk to Freedom, is available as a e-book or audiobook.

  1. Look up traditional South African recipes

Heritage Day might be the holiday associated with our national pastime of braaiing, but Freedom Day is as appropriate a holiday to cook up a South African feast. Whether it’s milk tart, bobotie, Durban curry, or a hearty traditional stew with imfino, you can find great recipes online. Start with a search from the Chrome browser, check out Food24.com or download an app.

  1. Listen to Freedom Day tunes

Your favourite music streaming apps, including Deezer, YouTube and Spotify, have many South African artists to enjoy. Here’s a great playlist of the top local artists on Spotify, or you could even curate a playlist of awesome Freedom Day themed songs to share with your friends. Here’s a playlist of anti-apartheid classics for inspiration.

  1. Share Freedom Day quotes and pictures

If you can’t meet up in the real world to celebrate, share your Freedom Day quotes, videos and pictures on social media. You can find freedom-themed quotes or the words of inspiring people like Oliver Tambo, Steve Biko and Archbishop Desmond Tutu on sites like Brainyquote
