The lightweight (around 1.2 kg) and portable (15.9 mm thin) Acer Spin 5 is enclosed in a stylish metal casing, that exumes quality and feels great in hand. Acer’s Spin 5 attempts to tick a number of boxes for professionals, postgraduate students, and the users that fall into the entertainment consumption crowd.
The device’s versatile, convertible form factor allows users to interchange seamlessly between laptop, tablet, display and tent modes making the Spin 5 a perfect platform to create and share content. This versatile form factor does not mean that users get deprived in the performance department though, as the Spin 5 is powered by Intel’s 8th generation Core i5-8250U processor and packs in 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, as well as 256 GB solid-state (SSD) storage. All of this helps ensure snappy bootup times, and smooth multitasking.
The notebook runs Windows 10 Home and offers secure and quick login to the operating system via the included fingerprint reader on the touchpad and Windows Hello.
Visuals and sound
The viewing experience is really good on the notebook’s 13.3″ full HD display that offers great viewing angles, brightness as well as good colour saturation and detail. The accompanying sound experience is equally competent as the Spin 5 delivers a crystal clear and immersive audio experience that is loud and does not get tinny at high volumes.
In terms of connectivity, you have a plethora of ports including a 3.5 mm audio jack, two USB 3 ports, an SD memory card slot, HDMI port and 802.1 ac Wi-Fi Connectivity.
The battery life was decent, as we managed just short of eight hours of regular use (40% brightness for the screen, general web browsing, catching up on email, uploading content via our web-browser based CMS system, and watching three episodes of our favourite series).
When you dial up the display brightness to 80%, stay connected to Wi-Fi, and do longer Netflix/Showmax binging stints, however, this comes down to just over four hours. You can charge the laptop back to a full charge via the included 45W power supply in approximately two hours.
All in all , the Acer Spin 5 is an eye-catching, flexible notebook that ticks most of the boxes employees, graduates, general users and content consumers need from their Windows notebook, even at a somewhat pricey recommended retail price of R13 499. It should definitely make your short-list of devices worth considering.
